Não houve grandes surpresas nas nomeações da academia para a 84ª edição da entrega das estatuetas de ouro. Seguindo a receita dos Globos de Ouro, mas dando maior destaque a Hugo, o primeiro filme de Martin Scorsese a ser filmado em 3D foi nomeado para 11 óscares, entre eles o de melhor filme e melhor realizador. The Artist, realizado pelo francês Michel Hazanavicius, vem logo de seguida na lista de nomeações.
O filme francês, que foi já este ano nomeado para 6 Globos de Ouro (ganhou 3) e 12 prémios BAFTA, está nomeado para 10 óscares. Seguem-se Moneyball e War Horse, com 6 nomeações cada.
Nomeado para melhor filme está também o outsider Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, que estreia no próximo mês (16 de fevereiro) nas salas de cinema portuguesas, tal como Hugo (16 de fevereiro), The Artist (2 de fevereiro) e War Horse (23 de fevereiro).
Na categoria de melhor realizador surgem 4 realizadores que já foram nomeados em edições anteriores, sendo que Martin Scorsese e Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) já receberam a nomeação por 7 vezes cada um, tendo ambos ganho uma estatueta. Terrence Malick (Tree of Life) e Alexander Payne (The Descendents) recebem a segundo nomeação e a eles junta-se, pela primeira vez, Michel Hazanavicius.
As surpresas são a exclusão de J. Edgar, de Clint Eastwood, da lista de nomeados; a não nomeação de The Adventures of Tintin para melhor filme de animação, depois de ter vencido a categoria nos Globos de Ouro; The Tree of Life só ter recebido três nomeações; e Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender e Tilda Swinton não terem sido nomeados nas categorias de melhor actor/actriz, apesar de terem sido muito elogiados pela generalidade da crítica.
José e Pilar, a submissão portuguesa à categoria de melhor filme estrangeiro, não recebeu a nomeação, tal como vem acontecendo todos os anos.
